How they loved each other and how they were all included and loved in a unique way. They struggled through the depression, WWII, the pathos of alcoholism and many other problems. The author grew up in small village in era that did not offer a lot of opportunity or even hope for anyone, but her family did not despair their circumstances. They were all |doers.| This shows up throughout the memoir. Their collective homes were filled with the laughter of children, music, games and love. These were relatives that truly liked being with each other. This is told in a poignant eight year old voice in |Dog Named Ginger| and |My Hero in a Homburg Hat.| This collection of short stories have been ferreted out as she grew in her life experiences and became the record keeper of her beloved family. To avoid what would have been a terrible scandal and to admit she was a homosexual, she married her best friend, Bob. She never for a moment would quiet the constant ringing of |god damn queer| that rang in her ears. It was many years before she came |out.| |Southern Comfort,| is the account of their life in Georgia, during the Korean Conflict. This story is a heartwarming, fast paced with tragic events but is told with humor of how their lives became so involved with the local community and endless fertility tests for the author. The newspaper business always held a constant love for the author. She began working on her hometown newspaper when she was 16 years old and returned the newspaper when she came back from Georgia and began to raise her family. The last part of the book is written from her lesbian life where she felt free and very much in love with her partner. It is still about love.
